Convert MOV to MP4

Turn an iPhone or camera MOV into an MP4 that plays everywhere, at its original quality or smaller. Your video never leaves your device.

Free, no watermark, no account, no size limit. Big videos are quickest on a computer.

How to convert MOV to MP4

Three steps, with nothing to install and no account to make. It works in your browser, on a computer or a phone.

  1. Choose your MOV

Drop a file on the page, or pick one from your phone's videos. Videos from iPhones, cameras and Mac screen recordings are usually MOVs.

  2. Pick a quality

High quality, Medium or Small, all at the same picture size. Each shows the most the MP4 will take up. Advanced options set the compression exactly, or make the picture smaller.

  3. Save it as an MP4

It's converted on your device and saved with the original's name: holiday.mov becomes holiday_ohsovideo.mp4.

Why convert MOV to MP4?

MOV is Apple's QuickTime format. iPhones record their videos as MOVs, and so do Mac screen recordings and some cameras. Newer iPhones fill them with HEVC video, which many Windows PCs, older phones and websites can't play.

An MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound plays on all of them, and on TVs and every site you'd post to. So before you send, share or edit a video anywhere else, convert the MOV file to MP4, and check the video size limits of where it's going.

Whether it's an iPhone MOV or any other QuickTime video, this converts it to MP4 online, right in your browser, with nothing to install. Your video never leaves your device. To make it smaller at the same time, compress video writes an MP4 too.

Questions about MOV to MP4

Is it really free?

Yes. There's no account, no watermark and no limit on how many videos you convert.

Does my video leave my device?

No. Your browser reads the MOV and makes the MP4 itself, on your device. The video is never sent to us or anyone else.

Will the MP4 play everywhere?

Yes. It's H.264 video with AAC sound, the pair every phone, computer, browser and website plays. That includes iPhone videos recorded as HEVC, which many Windows PCs, older phones and websites can't play until they're converted.

Does converting lower the quality?

High quality looks the same as your MOV. If the MOV is H.264 already, it isn't re-encoded at all, just copied, so nothing changes. Medium and Small keep the picture's size but compress it more, for a much smaller file.

Why is the MP4 bigger than my MOV?

iPhones record HEVC, which packs video more tightly than H.264. H.264 plays everywhere but needs more room for the same picture. Choose Medium or Small for a smaller file.

Can I make the picture smaller too?

Yes. Open Advanced to make it 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p, and to set the compression exactly with the slider. The estimated size updates as you go.

How long does it take?

It's done on your device, using its video hardware: a short clip takes seconds, a long 4K video a few minutes. Keep the page open while it works.

What if it says my video can't be converted?

Your browser has to be able to read the video and make H.264. Safari and Chrome on a Mac can; some Windows PCs, and Firefox, can't read iPhone HEVC video. Try Safari, or Chrome on a Mac or a recent Windows PC.

Is there a size limit?

No. Your video is read a piece at a time and converted on your device, so it can be any size. Very big or long videos (several GB, or long 4K) take a while and are best done on a computer; keep the page open while it works.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in an up-to-date browser on iPhone or Android. Keep the page open while it converts: phones pause pages in the background.

What is the new file called?

Your video's name with _ohsovideo added and .mp4 on the end, such as holiday_ohsovideo.mp4, so it sits next to the original. The original is never changed.
