Cut the awkward start and end. The first seconds of
a recording are usually dead air, a shaky grab for the camera or
someone asking whether it's recording, and the last few are the same
in reverse. Taking them off makes a clip look deliberate.
Cut out the dead air. Long pauses, a loading screen,
a stretch where nothing happens: they lose people. Trimming keeps the
pace up and the attention where you want it.
Fit where it's going. Shorts, Reels and TikTok each
cap how long a clip can be (see the
platform size limits), and shorter
ones tend to travel further anyway. Trimming first leaves
the choice with you rather than the platform.
Make the file smaller. Half the video is about half
the size, with nothing re-encoded. If it still has to be smaller for
an email or a chat app,
compress video afterwards.
Pull one moment out of a long recording. The
three-minute answer in an hour-long webinar, or a single highlight:
set the two edges and export just that part.
